SERVPRO of Berrien County has been helping fire damage victims clean and restore contents since 1995.
Fire damage is one of the worst things that can happen to your home. In addition to the damage caused by the heat and flames, smoke can damage everything in your home. Even a small fire can produce smoke that can affect every room in your home. Soft goods like clothing, blankets, towels, furniture, pictures, valuables need to be inventoried and safely packed out for cleaning and storage.
We will take a picture of the items, write descriptions and safely pack them in boxes and safely transport them to our climate controlled warehouses. This is where they will be cleaned and de smoked in our ozone room. Then we will store the items until it is time to bring them back to your home.

Free smoke alarms
Berrien County fire departments have smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms for residents in need. This means: if you need safety alarms you can contact your local fire department and request that they provide and maybe even install alarms in your home.
SERVPRO works with the St. Joseph fire department to purchase and distribute about 1000 alarms every year throughout the county. Each fire department receives a supply of safety alarms for home owners that need them.
Fire alarms are the single best prevention tactic to minimize injury and damage when fire occurs. SERVPRO has helped distribute over 19,000 fire alarms since 2004.

When your neighbor burns a brush pile...
Just when you least expect it, FIRE. This Watervliet homeowner came home to a complete disaster. His home was in great shape when he left for work that morning. But conditions were just right for a major disaster. No rain for 2+ weeks and it was windy that day. So the neighbor made a poor decision and lit a large brush pile on fire. It was too close for the conditions.
Things happen and then things happen. It could have been an electrical event or lightning strike. Nope, it was wind blown sparks from a nearby brush pile.
In this case SERVPRO was authorized to board up the home and work with the insurance carrier to help this homeowner recover. It takes a village to help with this much damage.
Please be careful when lighting fires.

House fires come in all shapes and sizes. This fire happened in Stevensville, MI during the dead of winter. Single digit temperatures and strong winds off Lake Michigan combined to assist this fire in it's total consumption of this shoreline home.
SERVPRO of Berrien County assists Fire Departments in their fire prevention efforts annually. We provide smoke alarms and prevention tips for residents. It has been proven that the best defense against house fires is a good offense. Be careful with lit candles, space heaters and compromised wiring. Don't walk away from lit candles, keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from flammable items and replace bad wiring.
This fire house had a bad wiring issue that resulted in a total loss. Luckily nobody was home.

Affected materials hold odor.
SERVPRO of Berrien County was called upon to clean up and restore a St. Joseph children's museum after a fire started in the attic. This tourist attraction will be sorely missed during cleanup and restoration.
The fire department responded immediately and used water to extinguish the fire. The entire facility was affected by smoke and water. Ceilings, insulation, drywall, walls, wood floors, carpeting, fixtures, contents and museum displays. Most of the affected materials required removal while critical structure was cleaned and sealed for odor control.
Where there is smoke there is fire and odor that will remain until removed through demolition, cleaning and reconstruction. The picture shows how affected the drywall, paper and insulation is from fire. All these absorbent materials will hold smoke odor until removed.

Smoke damage
Where there is smoke there is fire. Fire damage and smoke damage always travel together. You can't have one without the other.
Fire damage is something that is normally replaced because it destroys structural materials beyond repair or cleaning. Drywall, wood, flooring, carpeting, fixtures, trim, baseboard etc.
Smoke damage is many cases can be successfully cleaned off hard materials like glass, mirrors, ceramic surfaces, metal etc.
Particulate from smoke can also cause damage to absorbent materials that may or may not be cleanable. When items cannot be successfully cleaned they usually become a claim item. That means the insurance carrier replaces it. Items like carpeting, upholstered furniture, mattresses, pillows etc.
SERVPRO of Berrien County can professionally clean many contents damaged by fire losses. We work with your insurance adjuster to determine what is cleanable and what will be claimed as a loss.
If you ever experience fire and smoke damage to your home, we are ready to help you clean and restore your situation.

Fire suppression water shut off.

Commercial fire suppression main shut off
Commercial buildings that are sprinkled have a lot of supply lines under pressure throughout the building. This pressure is for the sprinklers to do their job when there is fire. These lines are under a lot of pressure. Usually around 145 PSI.
A broken 2" supply line under pressure will leak an enormous amount of water in a matter of minutes. That's right! What will you do when a line or sprinkler head fails/breaks and sprays? Shut off the supply valve at the main supply. The main is usually in a locked mechanical room in the basement. Figure this out before a line breaks. The fire department will shut it off if you can't manage to do it.
Shutting off the water supply is the first thing to do in an emergency water loss event. Then call your plumber for repairs and SERVPRO for cleanup. We are always ready 24/7 to help keep your building operational.

Air scrubber in basement
SERVPRO of Berrien County is always "Here to Help" when Fire, Water, Mold or even COVID affect the operations of your business.
A Southwest Michigan medical clinic had some old furnaces in the basement that overheated. The 30 year old bearings ground to a halt creating enough smoke to alert the fire department. They showed up in great form and stopped any further damage.
Luckily, the clinic didn't have to shut down but there was enough smoke odor that all the windows and doors were open. Fortunately it was a warm Michigan spring day.
SERVPRO of Berrien County was called to mitigate the smoke damage/odor. We set one large air scrubber next to the source for the weekend. Odor was not detectable on Monday.
The customer was grateful for our immediately response and solution for the problem.

SERVPRO of Berrien County is "Here to Help" when your home has any kind of fire or smoke damage.
Chimney fires are a common source of damage when people don't operate them correctly. Always make sure the flue is open and drafting before starting the fire. It is also a good idea to have a chimney vendor clean any residue or creosote from the inside for safe fires.
This home's chimney got too hot and burned the wood structure around the chase. The fire department was a mile away and was able to extinguish the flames and minimize smoke damage.
SERVPRO was called in to secure the openings with boards to keep the weather out. Minimal smoke damage was cleaned and the exterior rebuilt.
A very lucky and satisfied customer.

Devastating fire damage to this home's kitchen and surrounding rooms in Benton Harbor. The owner's young son was cooking chicken on the stove top and left the room long enough for the cabinets to catch on fire. These type of fires are very hot and spread rapidly. The occupants only had time to get everybody out of the house before the fire department arrived. It took an hour to get the fire out.
Every surface in all rooms was affected by fire, heat, smoke, soot and water. There were very few items SERVPRO could remove and restore for these homeowners. Insurance basically gave them replacement value for the home.

Fire Safety
The winter season is in full swing! The days are shorter and temperatures are lower. No matter where you live, winter brings a change in weather. In an effort to keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is responsible for an estimated $893 million in property damage annually. Heating is the second leading cause of residential fire deaths, making it important to review ways to help reduce the risk of a heating-related fire.
-Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater. Have a three foot "Kid-free zone" around open fires and space heaters.
-Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
-Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
-Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
-Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
-Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer's instructions.
Smoke Alarms Save Lives
8/30/2017 (Permalink)
Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.
The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be install in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detectors requirements are met.
Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or client to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.
Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance.
-Install smoke alarms on every level of the home including the basement.
- Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
-Test smoke alarms at least once a month using a test button.
-Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps" the battery is low and should be replaced right away.
-Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Data Says Pets Start Nearly 1,000 Fires Each Year!
SERVPRO Of Berrien County wants all of you pet owners to know these important facts. An estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by home fires, however, nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowners’ pets, according to a new data analysis by the National Fire Protection Association.
The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) and ADT Security Services have joined forces once again for the third annual National Pet Fire Safety Day (July 15) to spread awareness about how pets can start home fires but more importantly how to prevent them.
"Not many pet owners realize that their pet can actually be the cause of a devastating fire," said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Simple preventative measures, such as flameless candles and stove knob covers, can mean the difference between life and death for your four-legged friends."
Chris and Kay Wardlow of Oklahoma know that all too well. Their curious dog Lucy was home alone and spied a cake on the stove top. As Lucy tried to get a taste, her paw accidentally hit the stove knob and turned on the gas burner that was under the cake pan. Within minutes, the house was filled with smoke, triggering the Wardlow’s ADT monitored smoke detector. Firefighters were called to the scene, the house was saved and Lucy was rescued.
"Planning for unexpected emergencies like home fires and taking these precautions are an integral part of responsible pet ownership," Peterson said.
AKC® and ADT offer the following tips to educate pet owners on how to prevent your beloved pet from starting a fire, as well as how to keep your pets safe.
PREVENT YOUR PET FROM STARTING FIRES
- Extinguish open flames - Pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.
- Remove stove knobs - Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a stove or cook top is the number one piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire.
- Invest in flameless candles – These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles.
- Beware of water bowls on wooden decks – Do not leave a glass water bowl for your pet outside on a wooden deck. The sun’s rays when filtered through the glass and water can actually heat up and ignite the wooden deck beneath it. Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead.
Keep your pets safe
- Keep Pets Near Entrances When Away From Home – Keep collars on pets and leashes at the ready in case firefighters need to rescue your pet. When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.
- Secure Young Pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home such as in crates or behind baby gates in secure areas.
- Since Pets Left Alone Can’t Escape a Burning Home – Consider using monitored smoke detectors which are connected to a monitoring center so emergency responders can be contacted when you’re not home. These systems provide an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms.
- Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling – Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. Thiscritical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. Make sure to update the number of pets listed.

Eliminate Heating Hazards This Winter!
2/11/2016 (Permalink)
2/11/2016 (Permalink)
